Wondering what u guys think. I have read and heard many stories that whole grain is just as good as ground grain. Is this true. They digest whole grain as good as ground. Eitehr way the buffs eat her.

Lots of cattle finish on wheat in the southern plains, barley or rye on the northern plains. Only problem I'm aware of is that wheat in particular is best left to 50% or less of the mix as it gets pasty when chewed. Wheat and rye both have a higher protein test than corn so soy meal can be reduced or eliminated.

Wheat getting pasty may be a problem with four-legged critters, but it made a pretty good substitute for chewing gum when I was a kid.

I don't remember if it ever caused any digestive problems or not.

Stan: If your like me, digestive problems only happened in the past two decades. The one I always liked as a kid was popping oats out of the hull and chewing them for a snack.

Just think how costly snack foods are today, after the grains are pumped full of air, and trucked around the country.

Hugh,

I had forgotten about the "midlings" as I think the hulless oats were called. Also enjoyed grabbing a handfull of rolled oats (for the pregnant and lactating sows) and munching on that...better than cooked Quaker Oats in my opinion.

Stan: Corn gluten was another good snack, as was dried soybean meal. I always liked to peel a raw potato. Just think of the money the kids today spend buying potato chips, corn chips, cheese twists, cookies, etc. And to think we got it all out of a bin or barrel in the barn.

Seed coat on corn should be scratched open. Other grains mostly are as good whole for the most part. Whole corn can be done, but either high-moisture or you need to specialize with the cattle on it from little on & know what you are doing...
