Operation of grain drill

I got a hold of an old co-op/ blackhawk grain drill. It is a 13 hole drill which has a seed bin, grain bin, and fertilizer bin. I'm wanting to use it on about 4 acres of new pasture. The local co-op has pasture mix seed. I'm not sure which bin to put the pasture mix seed in. See the front bin is small about 5" deep and 8' long. Co-op says to drill about 25-30# p/acre of the mixture and the seed bin is small where I'll be filling often. Grain bin is bigger but will the alfalfa seed work their to the bottom and dispence first because of the seed size? I've never used a dill be for and want to get everything set right before I start wasting expensive seed.

Fluffy seed does not meter well, if at all, out of the grass seed box. Can you buy a pasture mix with little or no alfalfa, and run the mix with oats in the grain box, and alfalfa in the grass seeder? Some stores sell individual seeds, and can mix your pasture mix, sell you the alfalfa separately. One bushel of alfalfa in the grass seed box should be about right for 4 acres as long as you have a pasture mix with it. Consult the manual or the decal on the lid for starting points for setting each unit, then plant about 1/4 of the field to see if the setting seems right.

Grass & legume mixes are difficult to meter out. I don't really know what to tell you. In the past we have mixed it all with oats & just ran it all out the big hopper, but as you say it becomes very erratic with small, medium, & large seeds.

I don't think you want those small seeds to be metered out the big hopper. Very hard to control. as well, you don't want the legume & grass seed put into a deep trench frm the disks. Usually the grass seeder boxes just drop the seed on the ground, & let a little dust from the disks & the drag chains cover them.

You should only have to fill 2 times or so with the little seed hopper. So don't believe you should have too much hardship in that department. :)

How big are the grass seeds? Will they fit through the meters on the small seed box?
