Removing Ledger Plates, is there a better way?

There must be a better way. I've been going at it with a punch and have to say it's been very frustrating. I pounded for 45 minutes on one before it started to move. The last two I just drilled the top out an pounded the rivit through which was faster, but I was wondering if there really is a better way?

It's a MF #32 sickle bar mower, not that it really makes any difference.

Grind the rivet on the bottom of the guard then punch it out.

It's been years since I was around a sickle bar but as I remember by the time the ledgers were due for replacement the rivet peens were worn off and a couple good whacks, using the correct size pin punch, from the peened side would take them right out.

K, I just finished an MF32 mower. I removed all the guards from the cutter bar. Then laid each guard on its side on the anvil and drove a small cold chisel between the ledger plate and the guard body. A couple of whacks popped the ledger plate off and probably helped loosen the rivit a bit. I then was able to drive the rivit out the bottom of the guard. Got 'em all but one this way, I had to drill it out. These were originals on a 35 year old mower stored outside.

I was not able to source original style knife hold down clips. Please let me know if you find some. thanks,

I used a cold chisel to remove the plate once the rivit was gone, but never to cut the rivit, I'll have to give it a try.

This machine sounds pretty much like yours. It looks like it's been out side most of it life, and just needs a little TLC to get it going. I had to pound the bar out, I think the knive clips were pinching it, plus the rust, what a job...

There's generic knife clips that seem like they will work just fine. I'm going to go pick some up tonight with the ledger plates and guard bolts.

K, I did not cut the rivit with the cold chisel, just drove the chisel between guard and plate and in front of the rivit. The plate popped off over the head of the rivit.
Agco also has complete guards but about 4x the cost of just replacing ledger plates. The manual for the mower suggests drilling a countersink hole in the bottom of the guard so the new rivit has a place to 'mushroom' into.

My mower was seized at just about every possible adjustment location.

When i still used a mower to cut my hay, i used my angel grinder with a thin wheel to grind the head of rivet off. Yes you grind some of the ledger plate as well, but that's junk anyway.
