Fertilizer Costs (unbelievable)

Ok people I just bought Ammonium nitrate for the hay fields today @ $274.00 a ton. I know the natural gas prices drive the fert prices but when is it just too high. ANy thoughts?

I do prepay on Propane to heat the house (the part the wood stove doesn"t heat) and do the cookin and hot water.

I buy prior to 1 October and get it for about 50 cents cheaper than the winter time price. So I hope the fertilizer follows the same rationale.

Wouldn"t dare call it price gouging, but when demand is up so is the price. We"ll see.

I knew that it was going up but didnt realize where it had settled. This may sound insulting, please, it is not intended to be. Have you considered prepay? I locked mine in January at $190. Still too high but best I could do. Last year locked January 2 at $165, when my dad bought his for tobacco in May it was over $300. Economically, I cant make it pencil at over $200 a ton without putting a surcharge on hay I sell (and most of my contract customers had a fit when I put a fuel surcharge on). For what I feed it's about the same in a normal market. In this market I could go to about $220 on hay I feed and about $260 on wheat for silage to sell. Anymore than that and I'll have to go to feeding commodoty feeds or sell the cows (which in this market, might be smart to sell and buy back in a couple of years, but I'm not always the sharpest tack in the box).
