Stub Guards

I thought it would be helpful to others to relate what a difference stub guards have made on my NH 469 haybine. I have a field of mixed orchardgrass and red clover, and for better nutrition I tend to cut it at a little earlier stage than most. I've had trouble getting through it this year, with a lot of clogging. This cutting was almost impossible, clogging frequently and then just pushing the grass down. I checked everything: sharp sections, aligned guards, good reel drive and speed. I tried everything to get the machine to cut: faster & slower ground speed, higher and lower RPMs. But I had to give up: I was just making a mess.

Well, I got a set of stub guards, and now it is like mowing the lawn. I was even able to go over the mess I made and clean it up. If you have thick, grassy hay to cut, I would recommend trying the stub guards. I'm going to see if I can 'manufacture' some for my Ford sicklebar mower as well.

I"d have to agree with you. I cut about 100 acres with my 488 this year with stubs, and never had a bit of trouble. Everyone wonders why I don"t use a disc machine, and I tell them I don"t need one. Granted, I could probably mow a little faster with a disc machine, but some of my ground is a little rough, so I don"t think it would make much difference.

They have a lower rock guard that is no longer than the section blade, and a smooth ledger surface, and there is no top guard clip.
