Can anyone tell me what the purpose is of spraying the hay with acid when baling? Seems to preserve the color as I have seen a lot of really green bales being delivered around town and they can"t all be that fresh. Any other benefits? Ever seen anyone retrofit an older baler with this?

There is a short discussion here on the "using your tractor" forum.

Hay needs to be about 18% moisture to bale. With preservative, can be 20-25%.

A friend just added a spray system to his new to him MF228 baler. The baler is at least 15 yo and the sprayer is about 10 yo taken of an old baler. Uses a 12 v electric pump to deliver the spray via hoses run back.
