I have a vermeer 605C baler the lacing keeps tearing out of the belts .I have to fix the belts each year.I bale 500 round bales a year and was wondering if that was normal or if the belts should be replaced because i've had the baler for 5 years now and don't know how old belts are.they look good but I was wondering how often should you change the belts? Like every 5-10 years or 3000-5000 round bales?

There is something missing in the front about 19 inchs off the pickup between the rollers.There is two holes on each side of the baler wanted to know what went there .I made a belt guide for there because I was having trouble starting bales because the belts would get overlapped .now they start with ease .

"I have to fix the belts each year" makes me wonder if they are getting to short and therefore too tight, unless you are putting new pieces in to keep them at the correct length. The next time one breaks, measure it and see how long it is compared to the recommended length.I presume on this baler too,all the belts should be the same length?

A set of belts will last around 20 years in the right conditions. Lots of hay or rough condition and leaving it out in the winter will make that number smaller. Make sure that you have slack in the belts when you are starting the bale. I don't have my book with me or I would tell ya the proper length. If they are the belts that came on the baler I would say they need replacing. The baler is over about 25 years old. If you do decide to go new use 2 ply and I would but 10" belts on the outside and 4" in the center. This will help you start the bale. In short the answer to your question Yes old worn out belts will cause the lacing to pull out.

On the belt dimensions, the baler may have guides which keep the belts from walking over each other. That will dictate your belt width. Would like to use the dimension you mentioned, but mine is set up for 5" across.

I replaced belts this year as last year one of my bales ate a belt and I still can"t find it. They do start tearing out when old.

Some Vermeer belt guides are bolt in so they can be remove for larger belts or to be replaced. The ones that are not bolt can be cut out with a torch and welded back in later if need be. Some times the are worn so bad you replace them with a new piece of steel.

I've added new pieces to keep them the right length. it's the older belting ends thats tearing out .I was thinking of getting new belts but then I seen the cost .I hope they last for aleast a few more years.

Thats the bugger about an old round baler, new belts can cost more than the machine itself is worth. It is so easy to "Chuck good money after bad".

Yes you are correct a 605C baler is worth $500-1,000 and a new set of belts is $700-800. You still have to worry about the rubber starter roller condition. It"s a mid-70"s baler and it"s time has come for the wear parts to be replaced. If a baler is stored outside the effective life is 5-12 years depending on it"s use. If the baler is stored inside where direct sun light does not shine on the belts that have a life of 12-20 years. Once the ends need to be replace quite often, and all the belts are of even length, you might want to replace the belts due to oxidation of the rubber.
