For those who ted and rake right before baling, anyone ever hung a ground driven rake off the bucket and baled right behind it to save a pass over the field?

there is a system a man has come up with here in tx it is called the rake hand...it is a twin v rake with a long pto shaft and a baler behind the twin v...must work only in large fields ...i have places that have trees, poles,terraces and other thing i have to work around...but do have 2 twin v's.....have nice day may god bless

Not saying it's a bad idea, but every rake I've seen is a left hand discharge, and balers are right hand pick up. I'm in the same boat as you, but I still get everything done. Best thing I've done is borrow the neighbor's V-rake. Saves a lot of time chasing around the feild, with the rake and the baler.

Good thought, they have left and right hand side delivery rakes as the neighbour uses a pair like a v-rake but the right handers are more $$$.

If you have more than one tractor and driver, buy a second rake. Also consider pulling two rakes behind one tractor. When we were haying lots of land we put as many rakes out as possible. I still have a steel wheeled horse drawn that we keep tinkered up and it goes out from time to time. Nothing like seeing a couple old Fords, a early 3 cyl JD and a Farmall all working the same field at once.

Another trick is while the hay often needs to dry for an hour or two in the windrows, I found that the middle windrows seemed to dry the fastest, so usually I would start 3 or 4 in then do my outers last.

The Europeans started the trend for front mount equipment and I have seen a lot of things hung on the front of tractors lately. Are you raking hay that was mowed with a sickle bar mower or needing to gather up a MoCo swath?

That makes my head hurt just thinking about keeping up with everything flying around. Main thing I hated about V rakes was where they stuck out on 2 sides.

I like to use 2-9' bar rakes, 1 pass down adn 1 back with the set for a 36' swath in a windrow. Neither raking or baling time is limiting, mowing and weather is for me.

We don't have twin rakes, raking and baling tend to be time consuming, we have limited labour and I'm generally needed for the bale handling before I'm done baling.

BTW, I work full time too so this is all evening work!

The problem is just an hour or 2 of drying is what is needed after that last raking. Really no point to raking right ahead of the baler, might as well have formed the full windrow the day before or morning before. You must not be doing alfalfa, for if it"s dry enough to bale, every leaf will fall off with that raking.

Saying that, there are single & double front-mounted wheel rakes that will turn a windrow to combine 2 for baling. Very rare around here, but I have seen it.

Definatly no alf-alfa. Our cycle is cut one morning with mower conditionor with wide swath, ted next morning, then rake and bale immediately.

Trying to dry the swaths or the raked windrows is impossible here. I tried when the tedder was broken and by the end of the third day it was still too wet. Rained on the fourth.

We baled some stuff last night that really was too wet because a few days of bad weather is coming. We left it spread out with cut edges up and left one wagon in a shed. I took tempertures this am and it is still at 75 F, the temp we baled it at.

Would a left hand 3pt. rake turned around to mount on the tractor front 3pt. hitch not bring the hay to the right?
