IH sickle bar mower problems

The mower is a mid mount on a '47 Farmall A, and it wont cut very well. Cut grass seems to "ball up" in front of the guards then it just flattens un cut grass. Also it seems that when this happens grass will somehow wedge between the ledger plates and the sickle sections. I think that I need to "set it up" but I dont know what I have to do. Thanks in advance for any info.

One other area that you may want to check is the ware plates under the hold down clips. If they are worn too much the front edge of the sickle section will ride up off the ledger plate.

Either the grass isn't being cut, or you are going too slow.

First thing is to make sure the hold downs have the knife right down on the ledgers (not so tight they bind, but as close as you can get them) and try a higher gear to get some more ground speed.

Are the ledger plates in good sharp shape?When guards wear, they wear in a sort of U shape.The outside edges wear first.They don't work so good when worn like that.Rusty guards,sections?Tough to get a good cut in grass with a rusty sickle and guards.Try tightening down the hold down clips.You might have to remove the sickle to get them bent down where they should be.Serrated sections will do a better job in grass.Smooth sections work better in sappy legumes like alfalfa.

Bottom-serrated sections work well in grass. In fine-stemmed grass top-serrated are the worst....

Damp grass will do this.

Jumbled up, old & new mixed, flattened grass will do this.

Clover will do this.

If it starts at the far endmost of the time, you might need a double-section on that far side. They make special section that has a smaller twin section for extra cutting on the end.

Check the register of the sickle - turn the sickle by hand, and see that it centers itself from one guard to the other guard, stopping dead center on both guards.

Most likely your sickles and/or ledger plates are worn.
