I was given this sickle mower by a neighbor. Besides changing some knives and hold downs, the pitman arm is broken with all of the wood missing between the drive socket and the sickle socket. In the big casting above the pitman is "RM 89". Is that the model number? Is there a chance there are any pitman arms out there anywhere?

Re: Massey Harris #6 sickle bar mower in reply to Kevin, 08-17-2004 19:27:46
I know this was an old posting, but I think I know what mower you have. Sounds like a Massey-Harris #6 sickle bar. The part you referred to is called a "hinge coupling" for the cutter bar. You can get operators and parts manuals through this website. Also, for replacement parts go to www.balsters.net or call 1-800-621-3838 and talk to Les. They sell all the cutting parts (i.e. guards, sections, pitman arms complete, pitman arm straps, knife heads etc.). All reversed engineered stuff, but same as original. Almost done with a complete rebuild of the unit I've got.
Good luck,
Pierre

if it's an MF32, new pitmans are available from Agco, about $20 Canadian.
I'll check my mower in the morning for that casting number.

Thanks any help would be appreciated. I bought some oak to make a new pitman arm if I can't find a new one. But I also need to know how full to fill the gear box.

You can make one if you have both ends. If the wood is still in one of the ends, you can measure it and that will give you thickness.

Thanks Tim. I bought some oak to make a new one. I have both ends and I found an ad on "Yesterday's Tractors" for someone that sold an arm with the same part numbers as the ends that I have. I'm going to use their dimensions to try and make one. But I would still like to find out the true model of this thing so I could scrounge up a manual. I need to know how and how much to service the gearbox as an example.
