494A vs. 1240 Planters...What's Your Opinion?

Thinking of getting either a JD 494A or 1240 corn planter in the "offseason" and am looking for opinions on either. I have heard that the 1240 plateless might work better with today's hybrids than the plate planters. But, also wonder if repair costs might be more for a 1240 because of the plateless design. What are all of your thoughts?

Just looking for something easy to maintain, 38" rows, for several acres a year. I'm pretty sure I can find either at a decent price because of my location (SW WI).

Kerwin, I have a 494 that I used for 6 years when I had a produce business.Planted sweet corn, green beans, pumpkins, etc. with it. Great machine. I modified the boxes so I could plant 30 inch rows. I have a big stack off plates for it. I am just east of Janesville. Could be yours cheap.

I have owned both and now own a 7000. For the moeny invested a 1240 plate planter with double disc openers will do you very good. The 1240 doesnt have a gear box only spockets, less to worry about to go wrong. Make sure you keep the knock out roller and parts in the bottom of the seed box in good shape and you'll have good results.I am keeping my 1240 for a backup to the 7000. I really like my 7000 but then again I have ten times the moeny invested into it then what I have invested into the 1240. Keep your eyes open and youll end up with enough plates that you could plant any size of seed out there. good luck

The 1240 plate is the same as the 494A only with new numbers

I had a 494A, was a good planter, used it @38" x 4 row, did about 50 acres a year. Keep the markers out of the trees and you will be alright.

They are both good planters, and not much difference in them, the 1240 is a newer model. I had a 1240 plate type so I don't know about the plateless 1240, but have heard they had problems with them. I now have a 7000 with finger pickup units and they haven't been any trouble. I would most likely go with the plate type unless the plateless was a finger pickup type. I would also want double disk furrow opners on it.
