JD 14T bale length help ASAP

Help me, I can't get my baler to make the 34" lengths it's suppose to, it just keeps pushing the hay in w/o tripping and making knots. I've looked in the manual and it says to lower measuring wheel (which I did) and increase tension on bales, I didn't do this because the bales where already to heavy. I bought this to replace a IH 46 baler and it worked for the guy I bought it from, but I can't get consistant bales. Would doubling up the windrows help? Getting very frustrated. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

thanks to all who answered. My trip mechinizme is the original or first style, I have to change the length of bale by raising or lowering the sections of the star wheel indivdually. Does any one else have this style? My manual shows it this way too.

I had the same problem on mine.I had a broken spring inside the right knotter drive hub.This spring holds a dog up insde the hub until the measuring linkage trips.The dog then engauges,making the knotter mechanism turn.Standing at the rear of the baler looking forward(right side of bale shute)follow the linkage off the curved trip arm.It goes to the r.s. drive hub.The dog is inside the drive hub.It is difficult to get to but i was able to replace the spring without dissassembling the knotters.

I think Bruce gave you the right advice. I have a 347 and was having trouble making a consistant length bale, the serrations on the arm were worn off and the serrations on the wheel were also worn---I tried the file, and it wouldn't make a scratch!!! Got both new from JD...$31.00. I'm aslo going to pull my "star" wheel off and reshape the points. Got some hay to bale on Tuesday, so I'll let you know if my length problem is fixed.

some 14T had a stop on the trip arm for the lenght
others you made the star wheel longer it
soundslike you have done that part you could ck the hay stops in side chamber the 14t i had wuold make long bales with timot

if I remember right the 14T had a serrated edge on the measuring arm and after alot of bales this would wear off and the turning of the measuring wheel would not raise the arm to trip the needles my father cut new serrations with a file to fix ours back in the 70's jsut a thought.

I have a nh 320 as a back up baler the knotter has alwas had problems-now this baler might get 250 bales per year ran through it just for good measure, cuz my HESSTON never #^(*(&^$# up,,i have a portable cctv unit mounted to the 320 that will show me everything that the knotter and gauge wheel does that might be a good idea for you to try,,,, my unit cost me $59.99 at walmart

I'm not so sure on the light rows idea. I have the 224T and have baled rows you could barely see because it was very thin in the back of the field.
If you saw it work for the last guy then I would have to ask myself first if I changed anything when I was cleaning/playing with it. Try rebaling some of those heavy bales while you make your adjustments so that you cover the light row idea. Re-read the manual. Get a friend to look at it with you...my wife helps me....because sometimes the problem is right in front of you and you can't see it. Make sure the knotters are clean and lightly greased. If you watch it working while someone feeds it hay, you might be able to see the problem. Do this while stationary and be real sure to stay clear of the moving parts. These balers are good workers, take a deep breath and look at it again.

Assuming the knotter trip mechanism is working properly, I"d guess not enough hay thru the baler. Light rows will not allow the bale to form to the top of the chamber and therefore the measuring wheel can"t turn. Have someone else drive the tractor and walk beside the baler and watch what it"s (not) doing. I make windrows the width of the pickup and quite heavy. I just made 300+ bales with mine this afternoon from a MoCo swath in a very heavy alfafa/Brome crop, not raked. Bales were uniform, never missed a tie (touch wood |:)|) and broke two shear pins due to wads. HTH.
