Used parts--not always cheaper!

I"ve noticed there are posts here time-to-time from people looking for used parts for a particular piece of equipment. Sometimes you"re forced to look for used because new isn"t available anymore, and that"s OK. But there are people who look for used even when new is available because they don"t want to pay new prices on the parts. The usual assumption is that used parts will be much cheaper than new from the dealer. Well, here"s a story. I needed a perforated bottom door for the tailings elevator on my Gleaner K2 combine. Just for fun, I put a request in using that part number into an online salvage parts finder. Well, I got returns from 3 different yards on salvage for this little door, and their quotes were $40, $45, and $60. Got a brand new one from AGCO for $29.99. Still high for what it is, but it"s brand new. So check on the new part price first before you buy salvage, it just might surprise you.

Years ago on a JD combine corn head teeth went off a roller chain sprocket, shure dealer would not have on hand and needed fast, got a used one to get back to work, later checked dealer price, was about .30 less than used at $15.00, but the dealer still would have had to order it in with about a 4 day wait, used was back to work same day

Tim,

Sounds like you are getting it all ready for the bean fields?? Tryin' to dump dirt?

The sad part is that the little cover probably sold for $8-15 when the machine was new too. Go figure.

Do you run a perforated one on the clean grain elevator too?

Still trying to finish oats between rain, but beans will be ready beginning of Octoboer, so gettin" ready. I run a perforated door on clean grain and return, plus open the big cover on the bottom of return elevator, and there"s the cover under the sieve that comes out and lets dirt fall through to the return for ejection. Even with all that, I still get dirt in the beans in muddy falls.
