I cut some hay the other day and my round bakler went down. I had a little left and I aksed my neighbor's wife if I could borrow his square baler to bale it up. (He was out of town). I took it home and checked the fluid levels greased etc. There were no grease fittings on the U joints on the drive line. I think only one had a fitting and it was where the shaft rides on the carrier aatop of the tongue. Are these original equipment and if so why don't they wear out?

Hi, the #46 baler we had back in the 1960s had grease fittings on all U jionts and plunger shaft at both ends.

Possibly cost optimized in later production models?

the 46 came out with grease zerks,, now if the u joints have been changed at the local parts store
you can almost bet that they don't have zerks,, an easy way to add them is to drill & tap with the cheapest zerk possible

Brent,
I am beginning to restore a model 46 and it doesn't have any grease fittings on the U joints either. I don't know why. I just looked at it yesterday when I was cleaning it up for the first time. I hope to get an answer to this question too. Take care.

I'm not aware of the lack of grease fittings, but thought you both should be aware that 46's were notorious in this area for breaking plunger cranks. Otherwise, they were a much better, faster baler than the older 45's.
