Was wondering how the old CC cultivator's were used? They hardly look like they would go through sod, and in corn stubble I'd think the trash would buld up. But there seems to be alot of them around, so they must have worked?

Use it in place of plowing or with them?

I'm guessing they were built in the 50's.

thanks, andrew

There were several different versions of the CC field cultivator, CC, CC147, CC A, CC 7 (3 pt hitch) CC 10 (Also 3 pt) made from late twenty's-early thirty's up thru the 60's and possibly into 70's, steel wheel or rubber tire, hydrolic or clutch lift, 6 1/2' to 14' with hitches made to pull 2 side of each other, very good multi purpose machine but not heavy like new ones are

We had one that we used for working summer fallow in eastern Montana. We pulled a JD rod weeder behind it in a tandem hitch with a John Deere D'.

I used mine last year as a final prep before planting. They don"t dig in like a coil spring cultivator so they sort of smooth. Work good with a harrow behind. I bought an extra from a neighbor for parts, had more than the selling price in good teeth.

They were used in the spring to work up fall plowed ground. Typically called a quack digger in this area, used to dig up any quack grass or other weeds in preparation for planting. You are correct, they didn't work well in sod or corn stubble. Loren

Loren,

Another place that those old gals shine is in a tired alfalfa field that is invested with weeds and cheat-grass.

The things can't kill the alfalfa plants but they sure clean out the bad guys. Drag 'em across the field in the early spring with the teeth set at about 3" of dig.
