Didn't the 246-247 come from the factory either a three point or horse drawn? I am wanting to convert it to horse drawn if I can get the factory parts from salvaged planters, where I can put it back 3pnt. if needed. and keep it orginal. Thanks Coaltrain

The last horse drawn planter from Deere was the 999, The 246 was only a 3 point and could not be used any other way than mounted, could have been converted with homemade parts for IHC fast hitch or AC snap coupler, but never as a pull type, the 290 was never avaible as a horse drawn but if it was a clutch lift it could have a long toung installed and used but you would have to modify the markers because the lift of them was the ball hitch to hook to drawbar. The easiest way to use a planter now would be hooking to a forecart like you would to a tractor and those are made with avaible hydrolics for remote cylinder or some even with a cat 1 3 point hitch

I have a 246/247 set up as a 246- it is only a 3pt setup as far as I know. I use it for about 30 acres of sweet corn, and maybe another 30 of field corn. Great little planter, the only drawback is the lack of insecticide boxes.

Coaltrain: I could understand your thinking on this as many of the parts on the 290 are very similar to the 246/247. My manual says the same as Indydirtfarmer's. My planter is a 247, and yes equipped for cotton. It was sold new by the John Deere dealer in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. Never could quite figure why Deere shipped a cotton planter to the 45th parallel. Must have been some kind of government grant on that one.

You might be thinking about the 290 planter. I have a 246/247. (Mine"s in the 246 configuration. 247 is a cotton planter) I have the original owners manual. It list"s only a 3 point hitch, and a Deere 801 hitch as options. John
