MOCO or Haybine horsepower

Right now I cut hay with a sicklebar and a separate crimper. Need the crimper for one of my fields, like it for the others.

I'd like to move to a single mowing-crimping machine, but have a low-horse (8N in good shape) tractor with no chance to get a bigger one. I don't want to spend much money, either.

Can I do that? If so, what type machine and size should I consider?

thanks for any advice,
Tom A

Bkeeper: I along with quite a few of my neighbors each bought 9' haybines in the 1960's. At the time most of us were using 30-40 hp tractors. We thought they worked well. Within a few years most of us had bought 50-60 hp tractors and we really found out what makes a haybine work well.

No the 8N will not handle the haybine 7 or 9 foot. Most of the others have given you all the reasons. 8N was a great little tractor with a 7' sickle mower. I'm afraid if you put it on the haybine, you will be badly disappointed. 50 years ago there were men around, knew how to use a sythe and could mow more hay than you will with the haybine and 8N.

Hi, I have a JD 1217, 1219 and 925 MoCo, all require around 2400 lbs of hydraulics to raise. I have seen serval large tractors that the hydraulics is too week. You can buy a cheap guage at the farm stores and check it. My MF 165 & 135 put out 2800 lb"s. I can pull a 1217 & 1219 with a MF 135D(38HP) with no trouble. Bill

I don't think your tractor is going to be big enough, I pull a hesston 1071 with a WD-45 with fluid in the tires, that is a 7 foot cut. It is not so much the width of the cut as it is the weight of the machine. I get on a hillside with mine and it will push the tractor. Also the moco that I have has a min HP requirement of 35HP.

I am not very optimistic. I won"t say it can"t be done. I would strongly suggest that you try one your tractor before buying one if possible.. I know a guy tried to pull a baler with his. He baled about ten bales then said "that"s enough playing around" and unhooked from it. It might handle a seven foot. But even then with any hill at all it will be a heavy pull by itself. I believe they call for thirty to thirty five HP min. for a nine footer. The fact that it is offset to one side makes for a harder pull than a straight behind the tractor pull. I think the Ford 8Ns are a good tractor and ounce for ounce are just as good as any of them. But just not enough ounces in my opinion.

I was in the same position 30 years ago. I bought a 110 Hesston self-propelled mo-co. Paid $1700 then, wore it out, bought another one just like it 6 years ago for $900. It's driven by 5 different belts that are a pain to replace, but I wouldn't mow with anything else. It's powered by a V4 Wisconsin.

I would think your 8N could handle a 7 foot NH haybine or maybe even a 9 foot.
