Sman, The wheel on the back of small moldboard plows can serve one or two functions. If it is mounted on linkage that allows it to raise and lower, it serves to transport the plow, thus reducing the stress on the tractor hitch. If it is mounted rigidly (but some means of adjustment is provided) it is rightly called a "rolling landside" and serves to carry the weight of the rear of the plow while plowing. By rolling, it reduces friction vs. a sliding type landside, and exerts force against the furrow wall and floor to help keep the plow trailing straight. With proper linkage a tail wheel can serve both functions.
