Need to buy a sickle mower.

I have a '53 Jubilee. We want to start cutting our hay. This will be a "community project" in that friends have the rake and bailer (square). I need to find a sickle mower but don't have the slightest idea which brand will work with the Jubilee. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Get one that was made to work with your tractor. Like Jim from Utah said, the JD #9 is a nice cutting little mower and we've used it the last 4 years. But, mounting it on our old Case VAO is at least an hour job every time and took some creative rigging to get to hook on at all. Similarly our Farmall A came with an IH mower, but it was worn out and again is an hour or more to mount. Just found a Case #10 at auction and hooking it up to the old case was a revelation. Hookup took five minutes at the most and everything made sense and fit. No wiggling jiggling and haywiring things together. So, a long way to go to say buy one that was made to work with your tractor. Happily hooked up in WA

the deere 350 or nh 450/451 are two of the best right now most others are older so condition and parts are key. i dont personly like the newer sitrex where both knife and cutterbar move but they work well in hay.

The Fords mentioned below are good little mowers. But so are several other brands. Condition is really important. Better to get one that has been taken care of and stored inside rather than one that has been setting in the barn lot for several years. Usually better to get a belt drive than a stick, but stick movers have mowed millions of acres, so if you should run across one in good shape and at a good price, don"t not consider it. Also if you can get an extra sickle for the mower, then you can have one to sharpen or repair while using the other one.

Trailer sickles will also work, if you have a port for hydraulics as most of these require a cylinder.

Any 3 point mounted sickle mower will work for sure. I use a John Deere #9 on my Ford 850. Other possibilities would be a Ford 501 or 515. I recently saw a Massey Ferguson 31 that was a 3 point mounted mower. I thought it might be for sale, but when I went back I was told they were keeping it.

I have only used the JD #9 so I can't comment on the relative pros and cons of the various possible choices. I have no complaint with the JD.

I've got an 8N, predecessor to the Jubilee. I use a Ford 515 sicklebar for hay, which was designed for these tractors. Hook-up is a bit awkward at first, but it mows fine and is easy to take care of. I picked mine up at auction for about $400; later got offered another for $150 by a guy who was tired of tripping over it in the shed. If you get one of these, call New Holland and buy the owner's manual it will help you a lot getting started.
