I am thinking about buying a used mower conditioner to cut some of the hay with that is laying down and the disc mower will not cut it at cutting height,my question is will a mower conditioner with the reel in the front help pull the hay up and cut more of it or will the sickle just clog up more, never run one with a sickle just the disc type. Thanks

The disc mower will cut it but when the hay is laying over in all different directions it will not cut all of it close to the ground ,leaves some of it sticking up and that is why I was wondering if the reel on the moco would pick it up so the blade could cut it. Thanks for all the response and I hope this clears up what I was trying to ask. Thank You

The reel will help on the downed part; however the sickle blade will make you want to have a deck of cards along to have something to do you will be going so much slower to get the downed mess cut. Much more cleaning out of a plugged sickle.

Which is better, your call. Of course a discbine will take care of all your problems...

If the reel is set properly, a mower conditioner will kind of pick up down stuff & do an excellent job of cutting it. When the reel is right, it is kind of tough to clog it. A disc mower has to be awfully close to the ground to cut your tire tracks when cutting backswath for example. The old mower-conditioner really does a better job say on the backswath or in really flat clover. Have one of each-moco & discco.

Why wont the disc mower cut it? Only thing I've seen that a disc mower wont cut is soybeans.

Shorten top link to angle baldes sightly down in the frint. MAke sure PTO speed is up, and slow down ground speed. SOme folks want to try to mow in road gear. In down tangled hay you may have to go pretty slow.

Not forgetting new blades!
I am puzzled too, My experience with disc mowers is that they will whizz through almost anything. As you so rightly say, keep that PTO speed up ( 540 pto = 3000 disc rpm).Even short 'woolly'grass that you find in the undergrowth that tends to bung up sickle mowers (been there, done that!)disc mowers sail through like a hot knife through butter. The only agricultural machinery you see over here with sickle blades are things like combines and oilseed rape ( Canola? ) swathers.

I've had a New Idea Discbine for 13 years and never ran into anything it would not cut. Never plugged it. Cuts way better then the 479 NH Haybine, 800 JD swather, or anything else I've owned. Can't see any reason to go down to a moco again. If your disc mower does not pick up the crop, try slowing down the ground speed. If the cutterheads are close to the ground, they should wipe out anything in their path.

We have a NI mow-ditioner (moco), and it works pretty good in downed hay. Going against it it'll pick it up fine, but going with the way it was laid down you have to slow down for the reel to pick it up. I t also has 3 different sprockets(15, 21, & 24tooth) to adjust the reel speed. I don't have the fastest(24 tooth)but I will soon. It rarely plugs up, and it hasn't yet this year.

If the hay is down, a sickle machine will clog up every 10 feet. I speak from experience with a JD 1209, a NH 477, and a NH 489. If you want to get down hay that even a disc machine can"t get, look for either a New Idea Cut/Ditioner or a Mathews Company Rotary Scythe. Flail-type cutters that literally suck the down hay off the ground as they cut.
