I CUT WITH SICKLE AND RAKE WITH GROUND DRIVE RAKE, WHEN RAKING SINCE 2ND CROP IS VERY THIN, IS IT BETTER TO RAKE ACROSS FROM WAY I CUT? BAILED SOME YESTARDAY SEAM TO LEAVE ALOT ON GROUND. HOW DO YOU DO RAKE WHEN CUTTING WITH SICKLE BAR?

Well, anyhow....

Always follow the direction you mowed the grass. Follow same direction with rake, same with baler. Helps the most.

Short grass can be difficult to pick up with a siderake. This is why some rakes go $1500 at auction, others bring $50. all work ok in long grass.

Wish I had been born knowing everything! In case you didn't know it, this is what makes this site so great for lots of people, me included. You can come here and not only offer advice, but ask questions. Most of the time there will be someone willing to answer. Guess some people just need someplace to vent though. Oh well, one (or more) in every crowd.

I use an old John Deere steel-wheeled rake, and when the hay has been on the ground for a few days, I need to set the pick-up as low as I can to pull it up.
Something that helps drying and pick-up is a crimper. Since I've gone to that, the hay dries in no time, and stays 'fluffed' better.
Also, make sure you rake in the morning or evening: a little moisture at those times keeps the leaves on, and seems to aid in pick-up.

As Tim says, some rakes just dont do as good a job in light hay. A couple of things that may help: set teeth closer to the ground, make sure all teeth are in the rake, make bigger windrows (put more swaths together).

What kind of rake do you have? Some are just bad at making windrows in light hay.
