Anybody have a suggestion for the size rotory cutter I should get for a John Deere 855?

The rear tires are 49" outside to outside and I have always felt it should be wider than the tractor.

But, will the 855 have the grunt (19hp@pto, 3cyl. diesel) to run a 5 or 6 footer?

Thanks in advance, grego

I agree with scotty get the 4 footerI have bushed hogged hundreds of acres . and you go to big what a pain just like he said you bog down overheat or you don't have enough power to cut down trees.and don't buy one of the farm store specials. buy quality like bush hog or land pride and make sure it's all made of heavy reinforced steel ecspecially the hitch and check gear box oil once in a while the thing will last longer than your kids will be around.

Grego, I mow with a 5ft Woods Brush Hog. Tractor is Massey Ferguson 32 HP diesel 4x4. I mow 10 acres in Vt and it is pretty hilly property. When Im going up hill and cutting some higher stuff that diesel is working. With a 19 hp diesel I wouldnt get anythjing bigger than a 4 ft mower! Unless the property is all flat and your going not let it grow too high as Rick has stated.

Grego,
I use to have a kubota (20hp pto) and a five foot brush hog was perfect for cutting "field grass". I was cutting when it was 16-18". Any taller you would have to drop a gear. If you wanted to cut stalky weeds around 5 foot tall, the tractor would just about die, plus on the verge of overheating. I would drop into low range and just creep. What a pain, I was lucky to get an acre an hour that way. I learned real quick to keep it short and it was easy on me and the tractor. So if your mainly mowing a small field etc, I liked the 5 footer, heavy weeds or brush plan a whole weekend.
My two cents,
Rick K.
