I ran across a belt drive (no pitman) sickle mower yesterday. I had the remnants of a Massey Ferguson decal and an ID tag. However, the model number on the tag was blank. There was a serial number but I didn't write it down. It is a full 3 point hitch mount and can cut at any angle, even vertical. It wasn't advertised for sale, but the owner talked like he could be convinced to part with it.

My questions:
Any idea what model this is?
Did MF make more than one pitmanless model?
What should it be worth?
Do you know if these mowers can operate with the blade end lower than level (like for ditch banks and roadsides)?

This one looks complete except for some missing linkage part that has been replaced by about 12 strands of fencing wire bound together.

I already have a JD #9 sickle that works well, but this looks like it could be a fun project.

Good bet you have a model #41 Massey Ferguson mower. They were made by the ----- --pany, for Massey Ferguson. They sold from the late 60's, untill the early 80's I believe. I had one for a good while. Not a bad mower at all. MOST parts are still available through MF (AGCO)
I did exactly what you're talking about. I used mine to cut pond banks and ditch's. It would cut maybe 15 degrees below "level". I'll search my photo archives to see if I have a picture. If I do, it'll be posted on here soon. John

I had a MF "Dynabalance" mower, which I think was made by Massey, and was probably early 60's. It was an excellent mower- had counterweights that moved on a crankshaft type mechanism, in opposition to the cutterbar, so there was very little vibration. It cut very well, as I recall- sold it when I went to a disc mower in early 70's.

I"ve got a model 31 (cast dyna-balance box), which was the model from 1958 to 66, and was made by MF in one of the Canadian plants. The 41 has a welded dyna-balance box, easiest way to tell the two apart.
