IH Hay Rake

I just recently restored my grandfather's IH dump hay Rake. It turned out pretty well, so I decided to add back the original horse drawn hitch. Trouble is I can't find much information on how these were setup for a horse or horses. As I understand it they could have had 2 wide set apart poles for a one horse or a single tongue for a pair of horses. I can see from the bolt holes in the frame how a pair of poles might have been placed about 4 feet apart for a single horse. There is also a set of bolt holes about a foot apart in the middle. I guess these would have been used somehow to bolt up a tongue for a pair of horses? Right in the center is a single bolt hole. I don't see how a tongue could have been bolted on here as there is no where to conect it in the back. This must have been for a single tree? Does anyone have any advice for someone who has never been around horse drawn equipment?

Hi Marv,

I doubt if that dump rake was set up for a single animal, but who knows?

It sounds like you have some iron pieces missing. The tongue did not go back to the rear of the unit; it stopped about where those two center holes are. But it was bolted to some other irons that were bolted to those holes.

The outer holes were for brace irons which angled over to the tongue.

The double tree setup was then mounted forward on the tongue.

I know this isn't your rake, but maybe it will give you an idea of how they were pulled.
