how to measure v-belts

need a new v-belt for my side delivery rake. How are belts measured? Do they use a letter size or are these things like link chain 50, 60, 60h????; thanx

"A" series belts are 1/2 inch wide. "B" series are 5/8 wide. letter series belts are also about 2 inches longer than the part #..for example a b48 is 5/8 by 50 inches..don't ask me why.."L" series belts are different. the width is in 1/8 inch increments. 3L is 3/8 wide. 4L is 4/8(1/2 inch) and 5L is 5/8. the length is the actual number. for example 5L480 is 5/8 wide by 48 inches.to confuse you even more there are also belts of a better grade. they are also L series. a number such as L448 is 1/2 by 48 inches. hope this helps..napaguy

Width is a letter designation. B is about a half inch wide. Length is determined by measuring around the outside of the pulleys.
