Sickle mower questions

Maybe someone can help me, my IH 31 mower keeps plugging up on me. It has the special end knife section, but doesn't seems to be helping much. I've tried running it at allmost full throttle, 3/4 throttle, 2nd and 3rd gear, and combonations of the above. It has all new knives except 7, new holddowns, and the bar is slightly tilted down in the front. It cuts the thick shafted grasses and alfalfa great, but I have this yard like grass (short, thin shafted, dense) that gets under the knives and pluggs the whole thing up. Is there some way I can get rid of the small yard grass or should I plow it under and plant corn or soybeans next year and plant straight alfalfa the next? Thanks for any help.

I was having some of the same problems. Finaly got a new sickle complete, new hold downs, and guides. I cant believe the differnce. I use a company called sickle service. They have a web site and are very responsive, have good prices. www-sickleservice-com

Another thought...You should be running at 540 rpms...pto rpms..You may be trying to go to fast. A lower gear may cure your problem...when you go too fast you overrun your equipment and plug up your machine

First, thanks for the info. Second, might have been for nothing, was mowing yesterday afternoon and the end must have hit an ant mound or something cause the bar twisted on me. Fortunately, nothing is broken, but the bar has a big crown in it again, and I just had the bar staightened 2 weeks ago. Not sure what to do, the bar is pretty much junk now after being bent, straightened, and bent again, not sure how much strength is left in it. unless I can find a parts mower, I'm gonna have to find something else to mow with, and pretty fast. Thanks again to everyone who responded, and it's good to hear from ya Jeff, thought you were abducted by aliens.

Rich: Vern is rght, plus there are few fine grasses around that sickle mowers will just not touch period. Usually these are around buildings, old building sites, along roadways or ditches.

If you are running serrated blades they don't work for thin grass. Get some smooth blades.

Yes, I have the under serated knives on my mower, if I go to smooth blades, will it still cut the alfalfa pretty good? And how hard is it to replace the wear plates on the guards.

Not the guard blades, the cutter blades. The smooth ones don't grab the grass & pull it into the guards causing a jam.

Rich- ive been missin your messages.. i'll give you a call real quick as soon as i can. ive cut over 100 acres with my 1100 so far this summer.. trust me they can really use a lot of tinkering to work right. So far i have had to heat up all of my guards and bend them up so they come close to the sickle. Have relplaced the whole sickle twice. ( second is junk now) and have been able to mow some brome/blue grass mixture up to 6.1mph with my 685.-- running at right around 540 rpm. Ive had similar experiences with what your going through, mower would plug and trip all the time, time to replace the whole sickle, and all problems were gone. Good luck. hope this helps. Jeff

are the knives contacting the ledger plates? If not, bend guards until knives touch ledger plates.

It may be easier to just get swather guards for this mower


There is a ledger plate at end or bar. It may need changing

Try turning the sickle bar up some...use the 3 point top link or the machine itself will have an adjuster. The sickle bar slightly pointed down is for downed crop. Sickle bar should be level for standard fields, up for rocky conditions. The grass height is adjusted by the inner and outer shoes. Implement dealers usually have manuals or you can look at one at the dealers. Some will order the manuals for you..ask..
