When following the manual to time this baler the needles are flush with the bottom case groves when the plunger is 3 inches past instead of the 1 to 2.5 inches before the plunger. If I reatard the main drive chain 3 or 4 cogs to time the needle/plunger the feed fingers are 21+ inches instead of the books 17 5/8 to 18 3/8 measurement. I also replaced all the chains with no luck; help

chain may have jumped a cog

Are you aware that the manual shows timing the bevel gears at the top of the knotter drive under a metal shield? It's not in the timing section but appears later in the book. HTH

cab,I think it would be near impossible to time baler by changing frt.drive chain. When I time a JD baler I be sure the frt.chain is snug, make sure feeder fingers are in time,if not change feeder chain on large sprocket. Then time needles with needle lift mechanism(chain or gear).I remember when 224 balers were being used that it had a brass shear pin on needle lift chain and knotter drive that if it sheared it could be replaced in numerous wrong positions.Jim B

My brother had a 14t a few years ago that he timed and it would keep getting out of time after a few bales. He later found out that a key was shorn in the main gearbox that drives the chain to the knotters. this does not happen very often but it is a possibility if when you get it timed correctly by the book, and after running in a large wad of hay it jumps time. Hope this helps, the reason it could happen is that the gears fit on shaft so tight that they willdrive if the load is light with the key shorn but will slip if shorn under load.
