Regards to the JD no. 5 would you know what needs adjusted or fix, when I cut one roll it will cut just find, then all of a sudden the grass bunches up on the sickle bar and it would cut then just drags along.

First, get a manual on ebay and adjust the knife as instructed in there. Knife needs to be sharp, replace broken and worn teeth. Second, a sickle won't operate well if it is being dragged over the previous row. I usually cut clockwise around the field and after the first row there is a "clean" strip left by grass board. The inner shoe needs to ride there on the next pass or it will pick up hay from row one. Make sure you have a good grass board and that you are not picking up hay from the last row. Third, if you are cutting too early and the hay is thick you may have too much moisture and should cut later in the day. Fourth, try adjusting your speed. Make sure tractor is throttled up to keep the mower running at full speed and then shift tractor up or down to adjust ground speed. These are some of the ideas that came into my head. I have used the #5 exclusively to cut hay and can tell you that if it is not working something is not right, either with the adjustments or the operation. Hope this helps.

Nancy,

Could be a lot of things to do with the machine, but more than likely it is trash in the field left over from the last cutting.
