I'm clearing some brush and small trees out of an area I intend to turn into a lawn and garden area. I've cleard about 1/2 the area (100'x50') and need some advise.

I have lots of roots from the brush and the ground is rolling soft forest soil. I need to clear the roots as well as level the ground.

Would a box scraper help? I'm thinking the scarrifer(sp?) teeth might bust up the roots while the box would level the soil. Am I right?

I've heard that "idealy" a ripper would do the job but then I would still need to disc or otherwise level the soil. I may have access to a box scraper but I could go broke buying all the "perfect" tools while some might do well at a wider range of tasks.

Thanks for the help, in advance.

I just posted a question very similar to yours. Have you cleared your land yet and do you have any advise for me? I own a 30 hp 2 wd Belarus.

Tyler: I have a couple thousand hours landscaping and on a 50x150 wooded lot with softer soil I would just use a standadr dirt bucket on a loader to "grub" out roots and junk etc. That size lot should only take a few hours to shape up fairly well and the time to find the perfect tools is not worth it very often.....good question that all can ask themselves from time to time..... harvey

don't know the size of your tractor, but a box scraper with scarfiers will pull up lots of roots and other debris. watch out for stumps when digging as they can give you quite a jolt even when hit at creeper speeds. should go over the area with a disc to smooth out top. could use a rock rake to rake up area and also do some top leveling.

Thanks. I have a MF-2135 (MF-135 Industrial) so there's enough hp. Most of my stumps are more like sapplings but I wasn't sure how the teeth of a box blade would do for pulling brush roots.
