Have checked around and apparently there are not aftermarket replacements available. JD has a complete unit - head, bar and blades available for about $115. Also have a bar only, add your own blades and head, for under $30. I think the reason for my double failure was that I was trying to cut hay that was far too tough. Too much undergrowth of fine grass, could only mow a few feet before the bar would plug up, and trip the bar release. Also was running into lots of ground mole mounds with rocks in them. Ordered the complete unit, as I have to get the hay done as soon's I can. Next winter, I think I'll get a piece of strap iron and make my own!

I hope you checked with Mr Webb at sickle works. Complete bolt on with head for around $75

Went to his website - couldn't make much of it. Got the replacement bar today, complete with head end, (new needle bearing design), and complete new blades. Had to modify hold down, 'cause head was a little longer, but was out mowing today. Also replaced a bunch of ledger plates. Working good, but it still was struggle in heavy downed stuff. Don't know what I'm going to do with that - maybe the bush-hog. That doesn't do a very good job either!

Lower the runners on the inner and outer shoes, to raise the cutterbar a bit out of the debris.

Already at highest setting. Dad-blamed ground moles, anyway!
