I'm an editor at a book publishing company and am looking for someone to write a book for us on implements (from the 1960s to the present) that are used on small-scale farms. Previous writing experience would be wonderful.

Amy: I hate to discourage you but I don't think your proposal is feasable. There are a lot of crapy books out there on farm tractors, tools and equipment. I have yet to see one that I consider to be excellent. One of the big problems is our vast geography across North America and the very different practices we farmed with across the land.

I for one don't want to read another book about the history of the area I lived most of my life. I want to know about tractors, tools and equipment used that I am not familiar with. I think far better would be a book written dividing the continant into about 12 areas, utilizing about 12 chapters, and each chapter written by a person from that area that has experienced it.

Having said all of that I'm not sure your readership will be large enough to give everyone involved in such a production of the book the income they deserve. I was once asked to write a magazine article. I advised that I was not prepared to do so unless there were enough research dollars to make it correct. It never happened.

I think I might be able to tackle this - I have ten years experience as a technical writer for clients including Case-New Holland, Caterpillar and various short line manufacturers - can supply printed samples. Plus I grew up using implements from the days of a Farmall open station tractor and its associated small implements - even have working knowledge of hand-stacking hay! Plus have a good body of experience with the present day era of large automated machinery, for the sake of comparison. In addition I am an American Society of Agronomy Certified Crop Advisor, so reliable ag knowledge is a given - no weird speculation.

If interested, e-mail me at [email protected], or call (403) 934-3799. Thanks in advance.

Amy,

If you are serious please drop me an email at [email protected]. I have some past writing experience.

I have another (nearly completed) book on starting farming with older equipment I would be interested in sending you a copy for critiquing. I may be interested in another project if you think I would be a fit, I would need a few more details on exactly what experience you require.

Check with Muhammad, founder and moderator of "http://www.tractorbynet.com/", He has a published book on tractors and implements.

I would find such a project interesting. I am using AC and IH equipment with most of it being produced before 1973. Please contact me.

Amy, GOOD LUCK!

Experts are a dime a dozen or so it would seem to me. However most are only self-proclaimed experts. Finding someone who can do the job AND that other knowledgeable people will read and respect is going to be something like finding the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

There are a number of magazines published dealing with small-scale farming. I would suggest you check out some of the authors published there. That seems so obvious that I suspect you are already doing that. I use to subscribe to a couple of those magazines and read others at the library. I cant say that I ever really saw what I considered to be a really good article along the subject lines you are inquiring about. That is exactly the reason I no longer pay for a subscription to any of those type magazines.

It has been my feeling that for the most part the writers I have read on this subject, came to farming later in life. They had not been born or raised on a farm where the difference between success and failure of a crop meant the difference between having enough food to eat or going to bed somewhat hungry, or where making a poor decision on expenditure could mean failure of the whole operation. I really think the job you speak of requires someone with years of experience at farming and who has really had to watch every penny they spent in order to stay on, and work the land they love.

I would love an opportunity to critique and offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism for a book on such a topic, but Im afraid I cant offer any suggestions on who is qualified to write it.

Thank you for your help and advice. We have some farming magazines and have been publishing tractor books for quite a while so we know the field, but are just looking for some new talent and wanted to know if there were any writers out there who participated in this board. I grew up on a small farm myself and know exactly what you mean! Thanks again for all of your help and advice.

I want to order a copy of this book!!! I turned 10 years old in 1960 and the implements I was using then were pitch forks, hoes, sickles, pitch forks, shovels, and did I mention pitch forks? We made some of our hay loose, threshed wheat and oats untill 1961 and didn't even see a tractor loader until 1963. Pitched manure, pitched hay and pitched wheat. Other than three and a half years as a college freshman have been around farming all my life. I still use a lot of vintage equipment but have some modern pieces. I would be interesting to see the changes in 40+ years.

You came to the right place! There's a BUNCH of "experts:" on here. Some of them even know a few things..... ...(LOL) Seriously though, it's the cumulative knowledge of EVERYONE on here that makes this site what it is. There's a few folks that seem to know more than others, but everyone knows something. Maybe you need a "group effort". John

I respect your candid reply and think it to be accurate. This is expecially true when you insert the real usage in various circumstances, locations, people, experience levels and whatever else I missed.

I'm glad to hear I came to the right place! I'm looking for one author to write the book (and this site would be a great source for any questions!), and I'd also need 150 photos of the implements covered. The deadline would be April 2005 with a fall 2005 pub date.

Amy,

I'm retiring in Dec, 04 and have published technical writings several times (i.e. supplied technical text to the publishers). This might be an interesting venture for both of us.....as long as my friends on this site remain loyal and feed me information when needed.

The April deadline seems reasonable; I could possibly start on it now, accumulating facts and pictures and get into high gear in January.

I have been in the ag. arena for 25 years but on a small scale and in the Southern US. There are many large farmers, Northern US, and overseas that can (hopefully) add diversity to the topics covered in the text. Additionally, there are specialty experts here (really) that can add specifics to the subject matter.

I opened my email. Responding to this message is supposed to generate an email notification for me. I assume that that process will yield your return address and I will pursue it from there. Having never done this before, we'll see what happens.

Best Regards,

Mark

Amy,

I'll find some that don't contain company sensitive information and send them to you. Meanwhile we need to look into the covert method of email address identification as I don't want to put mine on the www.

Thanks,

Mark

Amy, I wouldn't try to pass myself off as an expert at anything. There are however, a few people on here that seem to know WAY more than others about the history and use of farm equipment. If you would e-mail me, I will try to give you a brief listing of the more knowledgable folks. One in particular stands out in my mind. I don't want to mention his screen-name. His participation in a project like yours is strictly up to him. I can be reached at [email protected] I'm going to be out of town for a few days, starting this afternoon. I will reply as soon as possible. (I'm at work now---different e-mail addy) Thanks. John
