Baler knotters-So the story goes

as was told to me as a kid.FWIW: International Harvester patended two different designs of the first baler knotters. They sold one and kept the other. The one they kept was what they used on the IHC 45 balers and other models of the time. All other manufacturers used the one IHC sold. The one they kept turned out to be a nightmare. If you ever had an IHC 45 baler then you know what I am talking about.Bale two bales and miss one. They were so bad,I once bought a fairly new one for $35.We finally figured out that if 2 of those little 12 volt defroster fans common to that era were mounted so as to blow on the knotters, they worked fairly good.IHC must have caught on too.The newer model 46 baler had the knotter mounted on the side of the bale, not on the top.

Hi, the 45 we had, the outside knotter would tie perfectly but the inside one was a different story. Like most kids of owners of 45 balers, I got to ride on the twine boxes and tie the bales that it missed. I got tired of this dirty job and observed that knotter for days trying to firgure out why it missed 1 in 50 bales. Finally convinced my dad to put a pipe on the inside kneedle a bend it downward a 1/4 inch. That fixed it and I was out of a job I didn't like anyway.

But your are correct, you had to stop about every 200 bales and clean the chaff out and also keep the twine knives sharp.

Don't know if the story about the knotters is true but I believe old McC-D grain binders had the other style of knotter.

my 2 cents
JB

Is this due to the dust and chaf? Maybe that's a problem with my side mounted Case knotters and I didn't realize it.

That was the problem. There wasn't any place for the dust and chaff to go on the old 45.I think most all of the other knotters on other brands were mounted up a bit higher.
