Do any of you fellows know where a bean picker..I reckon that's what it's called..can be bought for the small time truck gardener? I'd like to have something that can be powered with my small JD 1050 tractor (33 hp) and capable of picking one or two rows at a time. Sad state of affairs is the locals won't work and no migrant farm hands here. I'd like to be able to harvest my crop of half runners for the produce market quick and effiecently. Surely, somewhere down the line of time, such a machine has been made. I don't care how old it is, as long as it works. Makes no difference if it's ground or PTO driven. I ain't getting any younger and an acre of green beans sneering at me makes me want to get even! Thanks.

You might be looking for a Pixall. I think that they are fairly expensive ~$10K. Try Roeters in Michigan or Market Farm Implement in PA.

well, if they are $10,000 you can add one more "farmer" who went under. HAR!
I suppose if a man were into this racket on a huge scale, that investment may seem reasonable. But I"m a guy with a 24 year old tractor (that"s still NEW to me) and truck with 178,000 miles on it, a bum leg and just happy to be alive.

I got to thinking that there has to be something available, either new or ancient, that was made for what I need. Thanks for your input and I"ll do a search on the Pixall.

Green beans are tough. Everybody likes them, but nobody wants to pay for them. If the beans are good picking and you are fast, you can hand harvest about 13-15 pounds per hour. Is there anyone around with a crew you can hire and pay them by the pound ?

Keep searching, there is a fine machine made for picking green beans. My neighbor and I owned one in partnership for several years, got out of the bean business 3 years back. It was PTO powered and would pick one row at a time, easy to pull with any 20 HP and up tractor. One qualifier: these machines pick ALL the beans, there isn't much left of the vines when you are done. Good Luck, green beans are a profitable business.

Do you remember the brand/maker of the machine and where one can be bought? Yes, there is money in green beans...right now going for $28 a bushel and I have seen them at $40+. As you know, the trick is to hit the market early as well as have spaced plantings. email me and tell me more about your harvester.
