The over running clutch is damaged on my 273. The shaft spins freely and wont endgae the flywhee. There is the 2 pins with springs that are to lock into a land and spin it but my lands are rounded off.

Any idea on what caused the wear? Short drawbar or something?

How expensive are they to replace.

I had a problem where the pins were slipping and not engaging with the stops at the end of the ramps. I used a die grinder to sharpen the stops in a 90 degree fashion and they work fine now.

SL, You may have pins that are sticky and not engaging the jaws properly, or you simply may have normal wear. Keep in mind, everytime you shut the pto off, the flywheel keeps turning for a little and you hear a clicking noise. That noise is the spring loaded pins ratching over the cltch jaws. They will eventally wear. When rebilding, replace pins and springs as well. Steve

So that is what that slip function is for. I have a Ford 350 and that assembly fell apart. I took it to a machine shop and had a press fit sleeve built and welded it in place so that the shaft would rotate the slip clutch flange.

Didn't have any problems with it on the tractor as it is a Ford and the pto does not have a lock on it, thereby allowing it to freely spin till the implement quits rotating.

I broke the overrunning clutch on our MF224 this weekend, the flywheel bushings are shot and it let the flywheel wander and the pawls moved out of the rachet disc. As it wandered it ate the catches in the rachet disc.

Dealer wanted 460$ for the disc (hah!), 50$ each for the pawls, 23$ each for the springs, 34$ a piece for the 3 bushings.

...I had a similar problem on my Super 68....I think the problem is with the spring loaded pin....they get hot and won"t retract properly, causing wear on the land.....I discovered all this after my clutch assembly came apart..... .what the book doesn't tell you is that there are lubrication points on the housing that holds the pins.....I discovereed them by accident..... anyway.....keep them lubricated and you should have fewer problems.....

Thought those lands were in the flywheel on my 270? The 2 pins wanted to grab & not let the flywheel spin on mine, the ramps wore uneven. I toched them up with a dremel tool a few years ago, seems fine for now.

Again, thought there is just 1 bolt holding it all together, not sure what cross-threaded for the other fellow, or if the 273 is built quite differently.

You are correct - only 2 pins..(went & looked), with 1 bolt holding it all together. But on the 273, the lands/ramps are on the main center part of the clutch assembly.

The bolt I referred to is 1 (of the 3) that holds the whole clutch assembly onto the flywheel.

I was in a situation (with a lot of a customer's grass on the ground) & really couldn't wait for the part to come in..... ..

(wouldn't recommend doing this) but for a have-to situation as the lands/ramps on mine were completely gone.....I drilled a coupla holes in the disk for the pins to catch..... .made the baler 'direct drive with no over-run ability', could really be bad on the baler & pto system.....changed it out as soon as the part came in..

ps....assuming the lands are still in decent shape, check to be sure the pins are not binding on a broken spring or debri/dirt in the pin housing.

Now you have me wondering.... I'll have to look where the lands/ ramps were. Mine has real good catches yet, it just had rough ramps, did not want to freewheel - almost like your drilled holes!

It was really bad for me with the IHC 300 tractor I bale with, it has a pto brake, must have free-wheeling on the flywheel!

just wore out??

2 pins?.....seems like there were 3, (but been a while back...)

same can/will happen (in time) on the sprag that drives the pickup....also

Your local NH dealer can/should be able to, order you a new one....don't have the part number handy...

Be careful when putting the new one on....the bolts can easily 'cross thread'..... .been a while back & have forgotten the details....but remember having to get a tap & rethread..... ..didn't like the outcome on one of 'em, so I got a 'longer' bolt & put a nut on the backside..... .

(one of the 'engineering errors' on the 273 (in my opinion))

good Luck..

would have to 'dig' up past records to be sure..... but seems like it was in the '40 something' dollar bracket..... ..(was less than my 'not over 50 allotment for repairs, [unless "absolutely necessary" -- grass on the ground & 'sold' senerio..])

been a few years back though..... ....probably (the way things are going) in the '60 something' bracket by now.....
