buff-man; $2.50 behind the baler. Prices up from there. 4.50 to $7.00. Most of all mine ends up inthe retail market. It must be clean and shiney. Also different types bring different rates. Wheat straw is the cheapest least popular. Rye, oats, barley all have different rates. Rick

in years when there is any I roll up a couple hunderd bales to winter the cows on. most of it stays in the field. Looks like a golden oppertunity for some boys to get together with an old square baler and make some college money?

Funny you mentioned that about college money. My cousin's boys in central Ohio did that with some of their buddies and made a little money at it. Since they lived in grain country barn space was not an issue and wheat straw was not hard to find. Most of their neighbors had sold their balers along with their cattle many years ago and would let them have the straw and barn space for $50 an acre or so. They would sell the straw through the winter around the Columbus area and do well.

Any kind of straw $3, and up for better. Got to $5.50 last winter. Mostly horse bedding. Really got high a few years ago, most of the bigger farms have gone to wood shavings (and a few to grass bedding). One farm even uses alfalfa/grass hay for bedding; rolls the bedding and feeds it to cows. Seems like the way to go but hasnt caught on much.

West Central New Jersey, $3.00 per bale out of barn for bright straw, mostly goes under horses. Dark, rained-on straw $2.00 per bale at barn for landscaping.
