JD 227 mounted cornpicker

My Uncle has one sitting in his scrap yard, looks to be in pretty good shape, paint is still good allthough faded. Looks pretty much complete. Was considering buying it since there are really not that many around, and it is a neat piece of equipment too. What would be a fair price to offer? Also, were these pickers made to fit a specific model of JD, or will they fit different models?

J D sold mounts for most row crop tractors, for some makes hard to mount, others like the J D A I had mine on the hardest part was setting the wheels out, they have to be reversed and set all the way to the end of the axles, as to the picker all the lifting was to get the brackets on the tractor, had to lift to hang the brackets on rear of axle but front bracket tractor lifted and after brackets on tractor done all the lifting to mount picker

Is there a chance that it has the universal mounting kit? If so, it can be made to fit on just about any year or even color of tractor you can imagine. Quite a few of those 227s were mounted on Farmall Ms.

From brochures I have:

July 1953 - "for use on 50, 60, 70 and late model A tractors"

Another brochure from 1957 shows a 227 with the No. 50 sheller mounted on a 620 or 720.

The 1960 "Modern Farming" brochure states that the 227 "fits several makes of tractors, including the John Deere 430, 530, 630 and 730". What a load for a 430, eh?

The 1964 "Modern Farming" shows a 227 with No. 50 sheller mounted on a 3020 or a 4020, and there was also the 237 picker by that time.

I hope this helps - it looks as though the 227 fit a wide variety of tractors from the early '50s through the late '60s.

Personally, I think one would be a pretty heavy load for anything smaller than a 60, 620 or 630.

Kirk,

I really liked that old picker even if it was a nightmare to hang and then to take back off.

They came out with the 50, 60 & 70 series row crop tractors.

Nice old units; nobody wants 'em anymore 'cuz of the tough mounting deal.

Don't know what they are worth; seen 'em sell on farm sales for $200, probably for scrap.
