We are going to have a little threshing and plowing day in a couple of weeks. I need to get the rust off some of the old plows that have been sitting for several years. any good ideas???

Just a thought since I have two one bottoms (two way plow) myself to do. Has anyone ever tried a large electrolysis tank or the lye gravy concoction? I have a large plastic tank that the plow (bottoms and coulters at least)would fit into.

I just use a surface grinder on mine - get most of the rust off and then finish the job while plowing. However when I'm done I put grease on my moldboards. Next year the plows will shine up with no effort. If the plows sit outside the grease will only work for about 1 year and needs to be replaced.

I like to use a cup brush on the angle grinder. Wear goggles to keep the little wires out of your eyes. Then find a sandy or gravely place to plow. If the dirt sticks in a place or two just keep it scraped off every round and it will clear up.

I used one of those 3M stripper disks on a drill. They look like a black Brillo pad on a drill shank. Then I followed with a siphon feed sandblaster. It took around 45 minutes to an hour per molboard.

The pad is around $7, the blaster $20, and the sand $8. So for around $35 you can have some nice shiny molboards.

Happy plowing!

Drier sandy soil, plow a little, That's the _best_ way.

Old-fashioned elbow grease way was to use a gunny sack dipped in dry wood ashes, that would polish them clean without scratching them. If you want to be a purist, this is what was done.

You really don't want to grind any metal off, or introduce scratches going the 'wrong' way.

3-M has a product that goes on a 4" right angle grinder.Looks a little like a plastic wire wheel. Hard to describe but someone on here knows what I am talking about. The plastic is impregnated with grit. A different color wheel for each different grit. I used one on my plow this spring and it scoured right away.

I sandblast, followed by the 5 inch 80 grit in a drill, followed by one of those 12,000 stroke orbital air sanders 80 grit. Next try and find some dry old ground, not sod. Russ

Sounds like fun. Try half of a soft brick soaked in kerosene and scrub briskly. Then plow up some sandy ground until the moldboard is shiny. Stop after every round and clean off the stuck on dirt. Make sure that your plow is set up correctly for your tractor.

Got a sandblaster? otherwise try a wire cup wheel on an angle grinder. Spray paint the moldboards when done, and they will clean up really nice next time. Donovan from Wisconsin

If you are talking aobut getting the rust off the molboards so they'll scour, try a sanding disk in a drill.
