Dust or Mold on Orchard grass squ-bale

HI, I have some hay cut in late June stored in a wood barn that has dust on any side that has been exposed to the air. Inside the bale is no dust and any bale packed under other bales has no dust when you hit it. We have had rain 23 out of 31 days in July. Is this mold growing on the outside of the bale? Bill

This is not uncommon here. Frequently the outer bales that get plent of oxygen and humidity will be dusty when 'struck' or dropped. Appears generally on any hay that goes through an obvious sweat (which is really just leaching of stem moisture.) One reason why we can never leave hay on a wagon over night. Once it starts to sweat here, if you let it get air it will get dusty and will usually heat.

If you look back the past few weeks on this forum you will find a discussion I had with a man from Ontario, Canada who has been baling a long time and says he has the same issue as well as most people in his area. I am in SE Michigan and a good deal of my first cutting became dusty. My horse people are not terribly happy with this.
It rains almost every other day here with a few exceptions and the dust appears to be from a mold that is mostly on the OUTSIDE of the bales. I have the usual small percentage of bales with a streak of mold running thru a flake or two but no totally bad bales. Insides smell slightly musty but are palatable to our animals so I am feeding it. I have really given this a lot of thought and talked to our extension guy at MSU and am inclined to think that the hay could have used more time drying AND that the atmospheric conditions are also a factor. We cut and baled like we always do. The leaves were quite dry but I was a little anxious about the stems as it had been cool and only partly sunny. After it was baled and put up, the rain returned immediately and stayed. If I could have had another day to dry it on the field OR could have had drier weather after it was put up I think results would have been different. Not much you can do when there is algae growing on open ground. Just not a good year. Would like to hear if others are having this problem.

This hay all came out of serveral cuttings. The moisture content a day after baling was all about 14.5% which is what I normally see a day after bailing. Bill

This is consistent with what I am hearing from others. The hay was dry and it still dusted up.
I have actually seen a little of what looks like bread mold spotted on a few of these bales. It is a lot like moldy bread. Cut it open and it is reasonably clean but the outside makes it unattractive for horse feed. Still using mine but not for horses.
