Vermeer 504 IS

I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about getting a round baler to go with my small square baler and stackwagon to see if I could get some haying done faster (since I mainly put up hay on my own). Anyway, I said I didn't think there was a Vermeer in my future since I was inbetween dealers.

Ahem. Right now there is a Vermeer sitting out in the hayfield.

It's a 504 IS. Can someone tell me something about it? I had asked the local NH dealer to locate a baler for me, and this is what he came up with--said it was a recent trade from their store about 75 miles from here, so no one at this location knows anything specific about this baler. I mainly want to know how old it might be, and what a decent price on it would run to. Nothing has been said about money so far, and I have it for a few days to try it out.

From what I've seen on Vermeers, there was a large series of the 504 balers ending with the Super I? I don't know if "504 IS" would mean super or just the s is tacked on meaning silage.

Anyone know a web page where Vermeer info might be found? The ----- --pany pages seem mainly like brochures. Very little information and nothing on the older machines.

All comments welcome. :)

With Vermeer teh 504 means 5' diameter and 4' wide. The I series was produced from 6/87 to 1997. The supers and the silage started in Nov. of 89. The balers had either super or silage in the decals. The serial number tag is located on the main cross bar inbetween the gearbox and the main drive sprockets. The later model I's had a green and yellow paint the early ones had brown and black with the yellow. If you can post back with a serial number I can get closer with a date. It would be worth anywhere from 4.5k to 8.5K depending on belts early or late model wear and the list could go on. Does it have 14" belts they were the late model balers.

Thanks, James. The SN, if I can read my writing, is 1VRA111WXR1002176.

It does have the green paint on it, and it does say silage on it, as well. Seems like the two outside belts were quite wide, but will have to look at them to be sure.

This one has seen some work. The tin ware has been beaten in here and there and the paint is rust dappled. Doubt it was stored inside. I noticed the SMV sign on it is faded right out, and I figured it had to be ten years old for that to be that bad. It has had a shaft slightly bent in it. The dealer said they'd fix that at the end of the season if I decided to keep it. Cosmetics aside it runs well and makes a nice bale.

You have a 504 Super I with the silage kit. Going by your serial number I would say it was sold in late 91 or early 92. If the bent shaft is on a drive roller make sure the whole thing is replaced. Not being able to see teh baler I would guess from 6.5k to 7.5K. The above poster is right about Harold Gorter he knows his stuff. Let know if I can help anymore.

James, I could be wrong but I believe the green striping started in 1993 and the wide outside belts on the I balers started in 1994. If JJL will look either above or below the serial # plate, the year should be stamped into the metal and painted over with yellow paint.

I was going by the serial of our sales. We sold a higher serial number in late 92 but if it says 1994 then it is 1994. Let me know if I can help more

You are right, Hay Dr. in reply to Hay Dr, 07-31-2004 21:37:51
I went down to the lot this morning and checked and found the date way down at the bottom of the steel plate the serial number placque is on, next to the weld. Didn't notice it at all before when I was looking at the serial number. It's a 1994.

Thanks to both of you for helping me out with this---sure is nice to know exactly how old it is and what the model is called for sure. Now if it would just dry out here in Northern NY I could really try the thing out. :) We had a lot of rain here yesterday that it's going to take a few days to dry. I only did twelve bales with it before the rain started the other day.
