We seeded rye grass over burmuda, bale it in the spring, then bale the burmuda later. Sell either to the local horse owners til it's gone. works for us.

Depends on 'which' rye you are asking about. There is rye, the small grain; good for winter grazing and hay/silage. Then there is perennial rye grass. High quality, short lived perennial. Does not take heat well. Easy to establish, pretty low yield. Will self seed if let mature. Nakes good grazing. I wrapped some mid May for baleage and the quality was pretty low, RFV in the low 80's. Lastly, there is annual rye grass. Same physiology as perennial only it is an annual, not regrowing from crowns. I used the rye grasses once. Not again. I use rye regularly as a winter annual for silage in rotation with alfalfa where I want to take off earlier than wheat would be ready. It is more cold tolerant but lower in energy and protein than wheat based on the forage analysis I have had performed. Gives more total grazing but suffers more damage from hoof traffic.

Excellent until the avg day time temp hits the high 80's. Then, brownsville. But clip the stems after the seed pods have matured, and presto, another beautiful winter pasture. Will co-exist with things like bermuda grass (coastal preferred...long shoots). One in summer, other in winter ....geez what a deal. Feed it.
