I bought a 8300 grain drill & my local John deere dealer said people down here in central Texas dont use this style ? Hope it will plant oats for my cows it has double disk in the seed feeder you can move the top cup from one side to the other for small or biger seeds on the bottom side of before it comes out the tube there is a dial on each side for the small seeds or the large seeds has a sticker on it says plant soybeans it says on the other sticker oats- rye- sudan grass- will it work for me in Texas black clay?? There is a lot of sprokets on the front three top & three bottom . says 1-12 different speeds .

The double run drill is both gentler and seeds more accurately. The downside is that it is significantly more expensive to build, because it has a gear box(s) or other type mechanism as the primary means to change seed rates. I have a double run JD520 with a sealed gear box on each side. Works well. I have an older IH MF double run drill which uses a large wheel covered with cirumferential equally spaced "nobs" to drive the seed mechanism. To change rates you move the drive in or out on the wheel. You would suspect that the wheel would have worn out in the last 50 years, but it works good. The JD should last forever.

Yes it says double Run Feed Cups has two dials below one on each side the smaller seed side has some of the levers broke off maybe with some liquid wrenk & a good set of plirers I can get them to move so I dont have to tear the whole machine apart. Thanks for your info Stan

Stan,I worked for a JD dealer when 8300 drills were new in N.Central Texas.I think what you have is a double-run feed drill. They are supposed to plant more accuratly than a fluted feed drill but are harder to set because of having to change to differant gears. This dealer didn't sell any double-run's just fluted feed.Once you figure out how to set it for your crop it should do just fine as 8300's are good drills,Jim B
