My grandfather and I just bought it for $400. The lady said its either a '71 or '72. Its serial number is 996516014. It was put away running, no rust, everything is there, and it was kept greased. Was this a good price? What should I do about the sealed bearings? Where can I get a manual for it? What year was it made in? Thanks in advance.

If the baler works good, not a bad buy. I bought my number 12 at an auction, started the bid at 50.00, nobody else put up a bid, got it for 50.00. As for the manual, the dealers said that they could not get it. A very good source of manuals is at tractor show hear in Alberta. Some of the vendors bring manuals new and used to the shows for sale. I have used one such vendor for locating manuals for 6 differant pieces of equipment. Paid 20.00 for the manual. (Canadian prices)

I'd forgotten that one of my local dealers told me that they couldn't get the manual either.

I asked another while in there for something else, and they ordered and got it without any problem. Point is "don't take no for an answer!"

I own a 124 a 12 and a few number 10 balers take the time a drain the oil in the gear boxes and put in new, look close at the knotter system and take the small plugs out and put grease fittings in dont forget the lower double chain sprocket as it has one also. Go to a dealer and order both books for it. sounds like a fair price. the 124 was a much better baler but then double the moeny. One of my balers was bought new in 1963 has baled many many thousands of bales in its time. good luck with it. I had a couple of MF 10s, paid $600 for one and $350 for the other so I'd guess your price is in the ballpark.

Get a manual from local Massey Ferguson dealer, they can get them like a spare part. I got both operator's and parts manuals, as they're handy when ordering parts. I think reprints were fairly pricey, maybe $25 each. All the info you need for taking care of, lubing, adjusting etc is in there.

I don't know about the years made, though...I'd have guessed earlier than you said, mid- to late-60s, but again I don't know for sure.

I think you're rite about the year. I believe mine's a '64. I don't think they made #12's into the 70's.
