I have a Case 140W automatic wire tie baler with PTO drive. Serial #8L58365. Anyone know how to find out the manufacturing date?
This year, I think I will need to sharpen the bale knife. Any tips besides not getting the steel too hot and not grinding on the flat side?
Is anyone still using their 140W?
This baler has only been rained on three times since my dad bought it new. We have always kept it in a shed or covered with a tarp.
In 1984, I rebuilt the wire twister mechanism. A few years later, we replaced the flat (drive) belt.
The paint is still in good condition.
The baler could use a couple of new pick-up teeth. Anyone have any suggestions?

Suggestions for the pickup teeth or something else? The teeth on my Case 133 I've been replacing with CIH rake teeth that the local farm store has stocked. Match up good. Just picked up 15 of them at a marked down $0.66 each.

Loren, Thanks for the tip on the teeth.
I also wondered if you have any advice about sharpening the bale knife.
I have the manual but always open to other ideas besides what is printed.

Not really. I did a quick sharpen on my chamber knife cause I couldn't get the dang thing off the baler. Tried everything I could think of short of a torch. I ground the angle like you're thinking and be careful not to stop moving or put too much pressure and burn the steel. Since you have the manual does it say how much clearance between the knive blades? I made new guides for the plunger and set it at about 1/16th inch. Wary of getting much closer with all the flexing that rough ground puts the baler chassis through. Loren

Page 47 of manual.
Stationary Knife Adjustment.
Set the stationary knife at 1/32 inch to 1/16 inch from slicing knife. To do this use shims 0259N and 02060N, as required between the stationary knife and its mounting angle.
Be sure the plunger and slicing knife are properly adjusted before adjusting the stationary knife. (Only three cap screws hold the slicing knife in place.)

Hope this answers your questions.

It does, thanks. I didn't set the clearance in the plunger slide very tight so I guess I hit the 1/16th right on the head. Not bad for the first time working on a baler without a manual! Good luck on yours. Loren
