I just bought a JD 8300 grain drill at a auction it has packer wheels on back double disk & looks pretty good. Was wondering my old oliver drill had drag chains with big cirles that dragged behind do I need to put them on this drill??Thanks for any info.

I bought an 8300, 13 foot a few years ago. Big improvement over the 10 foot Moline I had since the 70s. Hopper holds about three bushels per foot of width, so refilling is less frequent. I can seed about 7 acres per hour with it. Packer wheels behind are much better than the drag chains that drills had for the previous gazillion years. You do not need chains behind- the wheels are much better. You may have an issue with replacing the shear pins on them- I think the earlier versions were more susceptible to shearing- just keep an eye out for that, and replace them right away. My drill has nothing behind, so I made a packer out of 22 inch truck tires. Does a great job of smoothing, packing, breaking lumps, etc. Used a cast iron packer behind my Moline drill, but this is better because moving from one field to another is not an issue- just go down the road with the rubber tire packer. The cast packers had to be transported off the ground- picked them up with the loader to go between fields. Both do a good job, but transport was an issue, along with the seed trailer.

It's an either/or..... packer wheels or covering chains; never seen one with both.

I think this is an end-wheel drill as I've seen an 8350 locally. It really depends on several factors. Type of soil & condition, type of crop, etc. I suggest you be a little more specific with what you're going to plant. Others can answer as up here seeding and crops are a little different.
