Well, I had a look-see at the JD Number 5 mower I had posted with regard to a few days ago - much thanks!

But I need a bit more help. In order to load this thing in my truck, I'd like to remove the sickle bar. Could someone tell me how to do this?

I don't have to remove it, but it would make it an easier haul if I could.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

OK...I went out and looked it over in the light of day. Never removed a bar before, but Bob is correct there are actually three of these pins being held in place by cotters....one on either end of the inner shoe and one that connects the bar to the lift linkage. That only leaves the pitman which is easiest to remove on most of these old girls at the gear box. Only one nut on that end. The bar end has a slotted strap that you force down between the two straps that hold the ball of the knife. These can be REALLY difficult on an old rusted mower. I have actually broken one. I would remove the pitman at the other end. Still might be easier to throw the whole thing on a small trailer intact. Watch your fingers on that bar, I've seen the knife drop a whole inch when I raised one. Tie her down good and have a safe trip!

Bob & Dave,

Thanks for the help!

Well it turned out that the complete mower would fit into my farm truck - that would be a 2 wheel drive, short bed Nissan truck! The rear wheel was at the rear and I lacked about 2 inched of being able to close the tail gate.

How did I get it out? I backed-up to a bank level with my tailgate and hooked-up my mighty Wheelhorse 520H to it, gave it a few tugs and the mower slid out well onto the ground!

Much thanks for all of your help!

BTW, this thing cost me all of 25 dollars! I'd thought I'd pay cash for this one - LOL!!!!!

Thanks again,
Bill

Dave,

To remove the pitman arm from the ball on the sicklehead, you insert a long, skinny, punch through the slot in the strap, and catch the bottom of the punch on the spring-loaded wedge that holds the straps tight on the ball. Use the punch as a lever to pry the wedge thingy back towards the wooden pitman stick, and the pitman will pop off of the ball on the sickle head. Takes all of about 20 seconds!

Yes....I know....but it is not always that easy.
I've done it many times and frequently the first time you do it on a mower may be the first time any of those parts has moved in 20 years. Sounds like it was a moot point anyway as he has it home safe and sound. Congrats on the great price, Bill! You beat me by $10 for my lowest one. Of course it cost me about $200 to get that mower running and on hydraulics! I prefer the last one I bought for $60....all I did was grease it and it has cut all this season without a hitch. Kind of amusing, I had some guy out west telling me they were worth hundreds a few months back and he would not listen to a word I said to the contrary.
Now go to ebay and get a manual and be sure to grease it on schedule as they WILL burn up if not greased, especially at the pitman/gearbox connection. Good luck with it!

There's a pin at the front and a pin at the back of the inner shoe, where the cutterbar pivots to follow uneven ground. Remove a cotter key from each pin, and if they're not rusted in place, dropping off the cutter bar is easy. There's a lift link, also, and of course, the pitman arm to remove also.

If there is one thing I am sure of about the #5 mower, it's that it is a bear to move around. You can put one in the back of your truck and you would swear it was stuck there and won't move...tugged on it, pushed on it, won't move.
First time you stop at a light, it tries to ride in the cab with you. Slides around like it's on ice....at least until you want it to.

Having said that, I looked in the manual and did not see anything real encouraging to help you. Too many mosquitos to go out and look at the mowers to see if it is obvious. If it were me, I would not do this. The mower will fit nicely on any 4 x 8 trailer capable of holding 600 lbs of awkward iron. Chain the bar upright and tie it down good. My opinion and I have hauled my share of #5 mowers around.
