I think it is time to replace the rack on my No.2 wagon seeing as one of the kids fell through it stacking bales last month (no injuries, thanks!).
My No.1 wagon came with 5/4 decking boards on it which are nice to look at but slippery when covered with chaff and dust. I think they only come in 16 foot max lengths also which makes them no good for No.2 because she carries an 18 foot rack and I need every foot. Where do you all get your rough sawn boards when you re-do your racks?
I know the answer probably is "anywhere we can" but a few ideas would be appreciated. Sources in southern Mich would be great if anyone knows any.

Try here, it is the find-a-sawyer service on Forestry Forum. There are a number of custom sawyers in Michigan.

Dave,

Try Amish sawmills, they would likely have the best price. What county are you in? I might be able to help.

I'm in Livingston County. Lots of Amish north and west of me. Know anybody?

Sorry, I don't know anyone very close to you, closest would be Hillsdale county. Two options: Drive around the Amish areas and look for piled up logs...or stop at the first house selling baked goods or produce, buy something and strike up a conversation. They are out there to make a living like anyone else, and they will pass the business opportunity on to a neighbor or family member.

Good luck.

Chuck

I just finished building a haywagon with 2x8 cut dimension white oak with 4"x12" runners. Amish sawmill outside Staples, MN. Call around to local loggers as they sell to sawmills & know who the fussiest & best are. You have to go there as no advertising or phones & may have to wait for the right stock to show up. It's worth the wait as pricing is 1/2 - 2/3 what the in town sawmills want.

I use 6/4" x variable x 8' for flooring, 3"x10"x20' runners, and 2"x6"x20' for side boards; all rough cut white oak. Local mills but that doesnt help you much in Michigan.
