What grade of bolt do you use for the shear bolt on the flywheel of your baler? I have a Oliver 520 baler and have broken a few shear bolts. I need to loosen the bale a bit to stop this. I have been just putting whatever I had in the bolt bucket in there. The last thing I want to do is break anything.

On the MF 224 we use I believe it calls for a grade 5 bolt. I'd be tempted to use softer gr 2 as it gets older to save breaking other parts.

Don't go higher, other things will break instead.

My JD 24T uses a grade 8 (6 marks on top) and lock nut. Both are available at the JD Parts Counter at a very reasonable price.

I used to shear bolts, getting progressively worse and would buy them by the box of 50. Got to where every 3rd bale broke it.

Put on new tying brake pads and have not used one since.

Get the designed shear bolt. They are cheap at your farm supply store. The problem with bolts from the bin is that you don't know what you are getting and as stated look for the cause, if your packing them to tight stop it because its hard on the entire baler.

grade 5 but look elsewhere. there is a reason it's shearing the bolt.
