My No. 9 JD sickle mower did not have a "Cutter Bar Transport Rod" when I recently got the mower. My JD dealer tells me they are not available. Can anyone give me some ideas on making one? I need to know the length, or ideally, the dimensions of the whole bar and brackets. Thanks!

I made mine out of 3/8 or 5/16 rod. Bent it in a u shape on one end and threaded the other end. I welded a washer at the ends of the threads so the rod wouldn't go through the bar and made a T nut out of a coupling nut. I can measure it in the morning if you want.

Just put the bar up and take a measurement. On the #5 it has a bend at both ends and the bar end is threaded with a odd cranesbill type nut (old style one-half wing nut I think). I have one mower with no bar and I just chain it up.

I have a comealong hooked up right now so the bar won't drop - but when I lift the mower the bar seems to tip too far over the mower. I have a broken rear guide so the blade drops down, putting the pitman onto the ground. I'm thinking that the lack of rigid support from the transport rod was a factor in breaking the rear guide.

The breakage of the nubbin that catches the sickle (knife) when the cutterbar is in transport position is normal. I have owned a similar Deere mower since new, and replaced the guide a number of times, and it's broken right now!

As far as the length of the transport rod, unless you're restoring it to concours originality, the exact length is not critical. Set it up so it folds to a sensible-looking angle, and you're good to go!

Just keep the pinkies out of the way of the sickle (knife) when you raise the cutterbar to transport position, so it doesn't clip your fingers as it slides down!

Thanks Bob! My concern for now is to move the mower by road for working so I'm not to worried about "original" equipment.

With a broken rear guide how do you support the pitman arm on your mower for road moves? Can I craddle it in chain or rope?

We have used a heavy bungee cord wrapped several times around the mechanism, just inboard of the inner shoe to hold the knife up for transport.

i have a oliver and i just put a visegrip on one of the sections between the guards and that holds my sickle in place when i have the bar up! oliver doesn't make that part anymore and i can't find a universal to work yet.

I don't understand the question. The 9 must be a lot different from the 5. When I raise the bar (with cylinder or manual arm), everything stays up whether the bar is vertical or horizontal. This is on a #5, now. If the pitman drops for some reason, I suppose you could chain it at one end or the other as long as it isn't holding too much weight. I'll have to try to look at one of these nines at an auction sometime to see what is up with this.

Dave, I just got my manuals this week and see that the rear guide is supposed to be in place to stop the knife from dropping out. I gather from Bob's post above, the nubbin on the rear guide has a history of breaking off. That explains the binder twine that was wrapped around the frame in that area of my mower when I got it!
