I have recently acquired a john deere 2 bottom trailer plow. I am trying to find out what model it is. I will give all the information that I can pull off of it hoping somebody can give me some information. The mold boards are cast iron with the jd casting or part no on the back, that number is 1441f syracuse chilled plow co. syracuse New York. The next thing I have Is on the rear of the plow the metal brace that is in between the two main beams is stamped john deere with a number under it. The best I can come up with is the first three digits, they are 15833, the last two I can not be sure of. It has 16" rubber tires mounted on spoked wheels. The trailer, or third wheel is a flat wheel with no dish in the center, the number on this wheel D 560 A. This is a cam type lift, when the wheel goes around it will pick it back up when you pull the lever, or a trip plow to some. I would really like to find out what model this is so I could put the right size tires on this plow. The last thing I can give is the numbers on the main beams, the best we can tell, the numbers are 515, and 516 these are located on the top of the main beams. thank you.

Dan, I think Stan did a great job of answering your questions, I just want to add that as near as I can tell, the 40 and 40C were never furnished from the factory with rubber tires. I think if you look closely, you'll see they have been cut-off and had rims welded on. the steel wheels furnished were pretty puny, but just right for a small tractor to keep weight and cost down. Bob,

Thanks for the comments. The article I read surely didn't show any rubber tires, and I'm 110% sure that plows didn't come on rubber in those days. Our first rubber-tired plow was a No. 44H in 1949.

Best regards,

Stan

From a series of articles in Green Magazine, the No. 515 and 516 beams were on a No. 40 plow. It was originally designed for use with the Fordson tractor and was a 2-14" only. Introduced in 1918, minor improvements, especially in the hitch area, were made through the first several years. After 1924, it was renamed the 40C and catalogs then referred to it as being for use "with any small tractor". The 515 and 516 beams were used from 1923 to 1934 with 14" bottoms. The 40C plow was discontinued in 1934.

You might post the question on the John Deere board...maybe someone there can add more info.
