Rebel with Hay Deflectors

I think I've got my banker/wife talked into a new baler. Delima is: I've got a gutsy JD 5105 with 40 pto horses and the 5400 requires 40 horses. If the hay deflectors are added, anyone have any idea of how much they lower the hp requirements?
I've read posts on here where guys are pulling 5400's with 60 horses and they say they know the baler is back there so with 40 horses would I be ok? Flat ground (not a hill within 100 miles), bermuda grass and Houston area native grasses.
Opinions appreciated.

We sold 96 balers last year and we sold "0" with hay deflectors.

I might very well be one of those guys you're talking about. I have a Rebel 5400 baler. I pull it (most of the time) with a 60 HP John Deere 2440. I DON'T run the deflectors. They are the reason why you CAN (should?) be able to run one with 45 HP. You will be right on the thin line as far as power goes. If you're on steep hilly ground, you might run out of muscle when the bale is just about done, and you hit one of those hills. The deflectors take some of the pressure off of the sides of the bale chamber, by not allowing as much hay near the sides. My 60 HP tractor will fly with the 5400 in most conditions..... except for this year.....Can't get any hay dry enough to bale. Good luck with your baler. You will find that there isn't a better baler made than a Vermeer. John

I would try it with out the deflectors considering your conditions if you need them they can be added later. They are very easy to install and remove.
